The Journey of a College Athlete: Where College Can Take You – Nick Akoto

From the UK to Tennesse, Florida and then the PROS!

In 2018, with BRUSA Sports support, UK native Nick Akoto committed to Tennessee Wesleyan University, joining the TWU Bulldogs in the NAIA. After two successful seasons as a Tennessee college athlete, Nick transferred to Keiser University in Florida.

During the summers, Nick sharpened his skills in the USL League Two, a summer soccer league for college athletes. His first season was with Ocean City Nor’easters in New Jersey, USA followed by a stint with South Georgia Tormenta 2.

In 2023, Nick achieved a significant milestone, signing with USL League One side, South Georgia Tormenta, marking his transition to professional soccer in the USA. July 2024, Nick signed a three-year deal with EFL League One (UK league) club Burton Albion for a record-breaking transfer fee!

 

The importance of alternative pathways

In college soccer, there’s often an overemphasis on the NCAA, particularly Division 1, leading to a “D1 or nothing” mindset. However, this approach overlooks some crucial factors, especially with the recent changes to NCAA D1 roster rules. Unlike in youth sports, collegiate teams don’t have age groups. This means an 18-year-old freshman could be competing for game time against a 23-year-old college athlete.

BRUSA Sports analyzed a random sample of top D1 universities for the 2023/24 season. We found that, on average, only 30% of freshmen received significant game time in their first year.

As athletes, you want to play and compete. That’s why we advocate for alternative pathways that prioritize game time over prestige. We encourage international students to consider NAIA and NJCAA (junior colleges) as viable routes to playing in the USA and showcasing their talents. Nick Akoto’s journey exemplifies the success of this approach.
